REAL-TIME SPECTROGRAPH

Start listening above to view spectrograph

The Real Time Spectrograph shows all of your singing bowls overtones.

This Singing Bowl Tuner App is easy to use. Simply strike your singing bowl and click "Start Analysis" to detect pitch. This Frequency Analyzer will automatically determine the Note, Octave, Frequency, and Cent Value of the first, second, and third harmonic. This works with Himalayan Singing Bowls, Crystal Singing Bowls, Gongs, and many other Sound Therapy Instruments.

Choose from multiple Tuning Standards including 420, 432, 440, and 448 Hz. Save your bowl analysis as a JSON file directly to your device for your records.

Features

  • Real-time frequency analysis with FFT peak detection
  • Linear spectrograph with peak labeling
  • Session history with tuning standard tracking
  • Save and label bowls by instrument type
  • Tone generator for reference pitches
  • 420, 432, 440, and 448 Hz tuning standards
  • Dark mode support

The Controls

  • Tuning (420/432/440/448 Hz) – The reference pitch your bowl is measured against. 440 Hz is standard; 432 Hz is common in sound therapy.
  • Bowl type – Pick Himalayan, Crystal, or Grounding (for very deep bowls) so the results fit your instrument.
  • Calibrate Mic – Teaches the app to ignore your room's background noise. Keep the room quiet for 3 seconds; once per room is enough.
  • Start Analysis – Begins an 8-second listen. Stop cancels it; Resume Analysis starts a fresh one.
  • Save Bowl – Saves the result with a name and downloads a copy for your records.
  • The chart – Tap anywhere on it to see the note and frequency at that spot.
  • Session History – Your last 10 results, kept on your device.
  • Tone generator – Plays a reference pitch for matching by ear.
  • 🌙 (moon) – Dark mode.

How the Analysis Works

Press Start Analysis, then strike or rim your bowl.

  • Settling (first 3 seconds) – The first moments after a strike are a noisy clang, so the app waits for it to fade into the bowl's clear, steady ring.
  • Listening (next 5 seconds) – The app listens to the sustained ring and identifies its notes.

Then your results lock in: the bowl's main note and its overtones, ready to read, save, or share.

The Spectrograph

A picture of your bowl's sound. Left to right runs from low to high pitch, and each spike is one tone within the sound. A singing bowl always makes several tones at once — a deep main note plus higher shimmer tones — which is why you see several spikes.

  • The strongest tone touches the top line; the others are shown relative to it.
  • Labels mark your bowl's notes — gold is the main note, purple are the overtones.
  • Tap anywhere on the chart to inspect that exact spot.

Reading the Results

  • Hz (Hertz) – The actual frequency the bowl is producing, measured in cycles per second. Lower Hz = lower pitch; higher Hz = higher pitch. Each detected harmonic shows its own Hz value.
  • Target – The exact reference frequency the detected note should be at your selected tuning standard. For example, A4 at 440 Hz tuning has a target of 440.00 Hz. Comparing the detected Hz to the target shows whether the bowl is in tune. The target value changes if you switch to 420, 432, or 448 Hz standards.
  • Cents (¢) – A precise measure of how far the detected pitch deviates from the target. 100 cents = one semitone. The tuner displays cents at 0.1¢ resolution (Peterson Strobe-grade). Color coding: green ≤ 1¢ (in tune), yellow ≤ 5¢ (close), orange > 5¢ (off). A "+" cents value means the bowl is sharp (above target); "−" means flat (below target).
  • dB (Decibels) – How strong each frequency is relative to the loudest peak. The loudest detected harmonic reads 0 dB and everything else is shown as dB below it (e.g. −12 dB is noticeably quieter than the loudest). Because the scale is relative, results look the same on every device regardless of microphone sensitivity — only the balance between harmonics matters, not absolute volume.
